There are some really nice restaurants and bars on the east side of the island. With various scenic lookouts, beach clubs, bars, and restaurants peppering the route, you can tailor your journey to match your pace. Paradise Beach is a beautiful beach conveniently reachable by a quick taxi ride from the ports. Even though it’s labeled as a public beach, there have been reports of an entrance fee.
If you’re going to see some Mayan ruins on the mainland you will end up on a ferry to the mainland. But if you want to pay for it yourself to check out Playa Del Carmen it will cost around $10. Both International Pier and Puerta Maya are about 3 miles from San Miguel, but it is a safe and scenic walk to the downtown area which I have done a few times. Taxis are cheap, but if you have extra time the walk is doable.

You simply “wear” a sort of “sub suit” that allows you to go 20 feet below the water and have unobstructed views of the marine life. And with Cozumel’s reputation for great reefs and pristine coral, this is a great thing to do while cruising to this beautiful island. You don’t’ even have to leave the cruise terminal to find places to shop, but do yourself and the Cozumel locals a favor by venturing out and shopping from local vendors. T-shirts and trinkets are incredible affordable and I haven’t found shop owners to be too pushy compared to other ports. Many cruisers love to take the 45-minute ferry from Cozumel to Play Del Carmen to check out some great resorts and beaches.
The best part is that you can access the beach itself without paying an entrance fee. What’s great about this beach is that it doesn’t have any rocks and has long stretches of soft, powdery white sand. Depending on the season, you might spot some seaweed near the water.
Most of the shops in the mall take the US dollar or the Mexican pesos. You might find a few that accept credit cards, but you are better off carrying cash in small denominations of $1, $5 and $10. Be ready to haggle the prices and expect a lot of sellers to come at you with cunning tricks trying to get you to visit their shops. If you aren’t interested a firm “no thank you” will work fine. Across the three you have a number of options, most of which fit into the party atmosphere.
If it’s nice that there’s a set rate for the taxi so you don’t have to worry about price, the bad part is that the rates are high. Most popular spots can be minutes from the cruise piers yet the rides can be pricey in our opinion. Renting a car in Cozumel is an excellent way to have a personalized adventure.

Venturing beyond the small town puts you at the doorstep of a protected natural environment and some of the very best scuba diving and snorkeling on the planet. For our most recent trip to Cozumel, we decided to book a day pass at a beach club on our own. Two options consistently came up in our searches, Mr. Sancho and Nachi Cocom. Both of these require you to book directly with them, and you’ll need to take local taxis on both ends of your trip.
